Rest in Peace, Joe. Probably one of the best leaders I’ve had in rugby. As fall Gaelics in ’77 & ’78, a handful of Dickinson students learned toughness and determination that wasn’t part of college rugby. One of my favorite rugby memories is playing at Buffalo Valley, my only “A” Gaelic match and my only Gaelic match as a back. Joe was scrumhalf and captain and frustrated with getting pushed around. He lambasted the ref for an awful penalty call. We backed up 60 meters before Joe got tossed. Afterwards, he told us that he needed to get woken up and we played way better.
