The 8th Annual Old Gaelic Rugby golf tournament is set for Sunday, October 3, 2021, at Rich Valley Golf Course.  We have room for 144 players on a first-come-first-taken basis.

Here are the teams we have so far:

Old Gaelic stepped up to the challenge of taking on D1 Playoff team the Potomac Exiles and responded in a huge way. The home team got out on the front foot immediately after Potomac failed to execute its opening kickoff and didn’t look back.

OG’s aggressive, physical tone opened up opportunities for Brady Reisman, Sergio Acala, Alex Schaefer (2) and Jase Martin to score tries as they built a 29-12 lead in the first three A-Side periods of this Inter Division friendly.

As Old Gaelic’s youth movement continued, flanker Micah Wagner and center Jayden Demmy impressed on their debuts; both were all over the field on defense, making breaks and setting up teammates on offense. Acala also represented well against Potomac’s Old Glory DC front rower en route to a Viking Hard Hat Award. Demmy took home Man of the Match, as he squared up against an Old Glory’s most recent draft pick for most of the day.

OG starts its league schedule next Saturday at Montgomery Bucks before returning to Double D Ranch on September 25 for a huge match against Doylestown.

Gather your rafts, air mattresses, sex dolls and other flotation devices for The Annual Old Gaelic Float. The crew will put in at the intersection of Creek Rd. and Rt. 74 at 11 a.m.. The route goes past Cold Springs Brewery, a convenient stop for a drink and bite to eat.

The pull out is set for the rt. 14 underpass off of Gettysburg Pike. Big Bottom Brewery is close by and another stop there after the float is an option for those interested.

It’s an epidemic seen countrywide. Now it’s coming to a rugby pitch near you: Younger, fitter, more athletic props are threatening the very existence of older, slower, more stubborn props nationwide. 

“They took our jobs!” exclaimed veteran Old Gaelic tighthead prop Frank Weaver. When asked to explain his point of view in more detail, Weaver paused, gathered his thoughts, then stated with increased vigor, “THEYTOOKOURJERBS!”

“I don’t see the problem with it,” said John Kane. “You know, they do all the hard work for 60 minutes, then I come in for the last 20 and finish the job.” Kane must have thought his comments were off the record, as strangely, when approached by his fellow veteran front rowers, he shifted course.

“I mean… DEYTOOKERJERBS!!!” he shouted, nearly inaudibly.

After eighteen months of uncertainty and nearly two years since a league match, the fall season is ready to to go on in the format we’re used to. The season kicks off with a home friendly against the Potomac Exiles on Saturday, September 11th before our first league match at Montgomery-Bucks (formerly North Penn).

Optional practices/prep for our Atlantic Cup players being next Thursday, August 12th and continues the 19th. Our first “official” fall 15s practice will begin on August 26th. We will resume on a Tuesday-Thursday basis after that, giving us 5 practices before our first friendly and seven before our first league match.

With a healthy mix of young and veteran talent, things are shaping up for another great fall season for Old Gaelic!

Summer 7s kicked off Thursday with a spirited practice featuring 25 players. Many were new to Gaelic, a mix of college players home for the summer and recent graduates destined to be the newest members of the Gaelic family.

Old Gaelic will start its season Saturday, June 12th at Lehigh Valley.

Old Gaelic hosted its frenemies from the East on May 22nd for a day of rugby, family, and camaraderie to remember our departed friend and leader Frank Lentz. Just as Frank would have wanted, the home team kicked ass on its way to victory.

As Old Gaelic emptied the bench throughout the day, tries were scored by players with a 20-year gap. Lock Alex Diegel got the scoring started off a well placed “hot” ball from captain Brian Hart. Then Austin Waugh scored the first of his two tries and the hosts looked like they’d run away with this one in the first 20 minutes as they built a big early lead.

However, with the desire to create an entertaining match for the loaded home crowd, Old Gaelic took the foot off the gas pedal and let Lancaster crawl back into the game. Coach Dan Roth called his own number in the final period of the game and put things back in Old Gaelic’s control with a show and go try. Then Ian Eggleston, playing in his first match for the Black and Gold since 2011 received a beautiful inside ball from Matt Leggett to put he stamp on this one and secure victory for the home team!

A thrilling Wild Rovers vs. Motley B side was played after, highlighted by the Rover himself Kenny Burke playing against some of the players he coached in high school.

The party then transferred over to the practice field where we grilled, drank and laughed deep into the night. Thank you everyone who made this such a fun and memorable experience, especially for the Lentz family who attended both the match and after party.

Old Gaelic hit the road to play Montgomery Bucks (formerly North Penn) for another Spring rugby clash. It looked like things would come easy for the visitors when Brady Reisman split the defense a minute in, and the Kory Harris conversion made it 7-0 early.

However, the Old Gaelic offense stalled from there and Montgomery eventually struck back with a try at 19′. Harris tacked on a penalty kick at 26′, but the home team scored the game’s second try at 32′, converted this time, and took a 12-10 lead.

Old Gaelic regrouped just before the halftime break; a big counter ruck got the good guys possession, they passed out wide, then back across the field to find new wing Alex Schaffer, who dove across the try line in the corner. Harris made the tough conversion and to give OG a 17-12 lead at the break.

Old Gaelic started slow in the second half with a number of nock ons and penalties before the team’s superior athleticism broke through. Center Jase Martin sparked the offense with a long try, then new forward Porter Miller shook off two(!) high tackles to return the ensuing kickoff the distance and build a 29-12 lead. Veteran prop Frank Weaver scored his third try of the season, Captain Hart took over the kicking duties and the visitors grew the lead to 36-12.

Montgomery showed spunk by closing the gap to 36-31, but flanker and former West Shore fly half Jeremy Fisher hit a penalty kick to make it a two possession game in the final moments. Jeff “Cappie” Cook entered the game and sealed the victory with a handful of powerful rucks in the final moments as Old Gaelic ground things down to the final whistle.

Props to Paulie Sommerville who made his first start at eight-man and earned Man of the Match, hooker Sergio Acala who was all over the field doing the dirty work to take home “Viking Hard Hat” of the Match, and Fisher who played another strong game at flanker before rediscovering his fly half roots to hit the decisive penalty kick.

Old Gaelic Rugby hosted Doylestown in its first home game in over a year. This was the first home game for many players, several of whom earned the first Old Gaelic “caps” of their respective careers.

After a promising start that saw Old Gaelic head to halftime up 21-19, veteran lock Russ Kane and rookie flanker Greg Armbrust were lost for the season with a ruptured achilles and broken ankle, respectively. Prop Adam Blood announced his retirement after the match, cutting short a valiant attempt at a comeback from a catastrophic knee injury. See you soon Blood, and we look forward to your third comeback attempt.

Kane remains optimistic. With his seventh orthopedic surgery, he has enough rewards cash to “get that jacket I’ve been eyeing for so long.”

Armbrust’s little brother Chris was a tad more miffed. After an ill-fated attempt at introducing his father to Hoops, this is the second major injury he’s brought upon the Armbrust family.

“My mom hates me now. Like, she’s not even passive aggressive about it anymore. Just aggressive,” he explained. Armbrust stared blankly off into the distance before continuing. “The word ‘abortion’ was used.”
